IGHEM Montreal ‘96 MEASURING HYDRAULIC TURBINE DISCHARGE WITH THE ACOUSTIC SCINTILLATION FLOWMETER
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hydraulic turbine discharges in low-head hydroelectric plants, and plants with awkward intake geometries can be measured relatively easily with the Acoustic Scintillation Flowmeter (ASFM). The ASFM is non-intrusive, and may be deployed in intake gate slots in a straightforward manner, lending itself to multiple measurements in the same plant. Examples of measurements in two generating stations are presented. Tow-tank tests have shown the current speed measured by the ASFM to be accurate to within ±0.3% over a range of towing speeds from 0.5 to 5.0 m/sec. A recent comparison of discharge measured by an ASFM and an acoustic timeof-travel meter, made at B.C. Hydro's Revelstoke Dam this spring was invalid due to installation problems. The factors affecting the accuracy of ASFM discharge measurements are discussed, and plans for further comparison testing are outlined.

Impact of the Confluence Angle on Flow Field and Flowmeter Accuracy in Open Channel Junctions
Open channel junction is one of the most common hydraulic structures that are used in various practical situations such as sewer, drainage, and flood control systems. Knowing the fluid flow behavior, is one of the most important topics in designing the efficient open channel junctions. The complexity and deviation of flow in the junction’s zone disrupts the proper functioning of the flowmeter d...
متن کاملASFM Measurement In An Open Spillway
Inadequate spillway capacity is one of the major reasons for dam failure in embankment dams. New Swedish guidelines for the design flood, adopted in 1990, have led to an extensive work with upgrading of the discharge capacity in a number of dams. A large number of dams have such a spillway design that they do not easily allow for accurate theoretical calculations of the discharge capacity due t...
متن کاملComparison of Turbine Discharge Measured by Current Meters and Acoustic Scintillation Flow Meter at Laforge-2 Power Plant
Performance tests were conducted at Unit 22 at Hydro-Québec’s Laforge-2 plant between June 11 and 15, 1997. These tests included measurements of the discharge through the turbine using current meters. Simultaneous measurements were also taken in one bay of the intake with an Acoustic Scintillation Flow Meter (ASFM). The ASFM is a new instrument which offers unique advantages for measuring intak...
متن کاملInfluence of the Vortex Rope Location of a Francis Turbine on the Hydraulic System Stability
Hydroelectric power plants are known for their ability to cover variations of the consumption in electrical power networks. In order to follow this changing demand, hydraulic machines are subject to off-design operation. In that case, the swirling flow leaving the runner of a Francis turbine may act under given conditions as an excitation source for the whole hydraulic system. In high load oper...
متن کاملMethodology for Risk Assessment of Part Load Resonance in Francis Turbine Power Plant
At low flow rate operation, Francis turbines feature a cavitating vortex rope in the draft tube resulting from the swirling flow of the runner outlet. The unsteady pressure field related to the precession of the vortex rope induces plane wave propagating in the entire hydraulic system. The frequency of the vortex rope precession being comprised between 0.2 and 0.4 times the turbine rotational s...
